CGS Grading Process

Place Order

We use a combination of technologies as well as our skilled staff to accurately and consistently grade each card. We grade on a quarter (.25) point system with the following criteria.

FOUR CATEGORIES:

  • Corners: Each corner is evaluated for sharpness and quality, then this category is assigned its own grade.
  • Edges: Each edge is evaluated for sharpness and quality, then this category is assigned its own grade.
  • Surface: Both front and back surfaces are evaluated for blemishes, color, quality, then this category is assigned its own grade.
  • Centering: The card is analyzed for degree of centering, then this category is assigned its own grade.

These grades are printed on each card’s slab label.

Determining an Overall Grade

The four grades are averaged and then rounded up or down to the nearest quarter point based on the following:

  • .15 or higher is rounded up to the next quarter-point. Example: Corners 8.75, Edges 8.75, Surface 8.00, Centering 9.25 = 8.6875; as this is .1875 over 8.5, the Grade would be a CGS 8.75
  • .1499 or lower is rounded down to the next quarter-point. Example: Corners 8.25, Edges 8.75, Surface 8.00, Centering 9.25 = 8.5625; as this is .0625 over 8.5, the Grade would be a CGS 8.50
  • If one of the four grading categories are below an 8.00 and the overall grade falls between quarter points, the overall grade will be rounded down and deducted another .25
  • If two or more of the four grading categories are below an 8.00 and the overall grade falls between quarter points, the overall grade will be rounded down and deducted another .50
  • If two or more of the four categories are 10 and the overall grade falls between quarter points, the overall grade will be rounded up.
  • If a card has two or more 10’s (of the four categories) and one or more grades under an 8.00 (of the four categories) and falls between quarter points, the overall grade reverts back to the .15 or higher gets rounded up and .14 or lower gets rounded down.
  • In order for a card to be graded a 10 overall, it must be graded a 10 in each of the four categories.
